# Niv — Markdown notes, linked and shared

**Think in networks.** Markdown notes in a folder you own. Link ideas, write together, and use the AI you already have.

[Download Niv for macOS](https://releases.niv.md/desktop/latest/Niv.dmg). Free. Opens the Markdown folder you already have, including an Obsidian vault.

## Your notes, your way, with whoever you want.

Niv is a desktop app that works right in a folder of Markdown files, on the Mac today. Nothing gets locked inside it.

### Your files are yours.

Every note is a .md file in a folder you own. It works offline, and the same files open in any editor.

### Bring your Obsidian.

Open the vault you already have. Folders stay as they are and your `[[links]]` keep working.

### Write together, for free.

Invite people to a Space and write in the same note at the same time, each with their own cursor. Everything syncs across your devices.

## Connect your ideas.

From your journal to your reading, from a thesis to your team’s project: put a note’s name in double brackets and Niv keeps the path from one idea to the next.

### Links

Type `[[` and pick the note. The link lives in the text, and the file stays plain Markdown.

### Backlinks

Every note shows who mentions it, with the passage where it appears.

### Graph

See how your notes connect. Every note is a node, every link a path.

### Search

Press ⌘K and find any note, by its title or by a phrase inside it.

## Bring the AI you already use.

Niv’s chat runs the agent you already have, locally, with your account and your plan. Niv’s own AI is on the way.

### In Niv’s chat

Pick the agent and the access level: Auto, Ask before shell or Full access. It reads, searches, writes and organizes notes, and every action shows up in the conversation.

### Or right in your terminal

Open your notes folder and talk to the agent there. With Niv open, every change syncs to your Space as usual.

## Your day starts on its own.

With templates and recurring notes, today’s note shows up on its own, already in your format. Home shows your day in one place.

### Nothing gets lost.

Every note keeps its versions. Compare with an earlier one and restore the one you want.

## Publish your notes on the web.

Straight from the app, a note becomes a public page. Links between published notes keep working, and the pages are made to show up in search.

### From a note to the web

You publish from Niv, with nothing to export. The page is your note.

### Links keep working

A `[[link]]` to another published note becomes a real link on the page.

### Made to be found

Every page comes out ready for search engines.

## Before you download

Short answers to what people ask first.

### Is Niv free?

Yes. The app, sync across your devices, writing together in a shared Space and publishing a note to the web cost nothing.

### Does my Obsidian vault work in Niv?

Yes. Choose the vault’s folder and your notes open where they are, with their [[links]], backlinks and graph. Niv never writes to .obsidian and runs none of Obsidian’s plugins, so the same files still open in Obsidian.

### Which devices does Niv run on?

Niv is on the Mac today: macOS 13 Ventura or later, Apple silicon or Intel. Windows, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android have a waitlist.

### Where are my notes kept?

In a folder you choose, as plain Markdown files. Sign in and they also sync to your Space and across your devices; you can start offline and sign in later. A note you keep local only never leaves your device.

### Which AI agents work with Niv?

The one you already use: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, Grok or Antigravity, installed on your computer and signed in with your own account. Niv’s chat runs it on your notes, with the access level you choose.

### Can I publish notes and invite people?

Yes. Turn a note, or a whole folder, into public web pages from the app, and invite people to a Space by email from the Space’s settings, under People. The Space’s owners and editors can do both.

## Start with your first note.

Free: the app, sync across your devices, and real-time writing with whoever you invite.
