# Find your way around

Niv's window has three parts: the sidebar on the left, your open notes in the middle, and the note's context on the right.

![The Niv window: the sidebar on the left, a note in the middle, and the right rail on Links](https://niv.md/docs-media/window.dark.png)

## The sidebar

At the top:

- **Home**: your day in one place. See [Home](/p/docs/home).
- **Search**: search the text of every note (⌘K). See [Search](/p/docs/search).
- **Graph**: how your notes connect. See [The graph](/p/docs/the-graph).
- **AI Chat**: your chats, and **New chat**. See [AI chat](/p/docs/ai-chat).

Below that is **Notes**, the folders and notes in your folder. See [Notes and folders](/p/docs/notes-and-folders).

At the bottom is the sync line: the Space's name and a word like "synced" or "offline". Click it to open the matching part of Settings. See [Sync status](/p/docs/sync-status).

⌘B shows or hides the sidebar. Drag its edge to make it wider or narrower.

## Tabs

Each open note has a tab. ⌘T opens a new tab and ⌘W closes the current one. Home, the graph and AI chats open in tabs too.

## The right rail

The rail beside a note shows its context, in six tabs:

- **AI**: a chat next to the note.
- **Links**: what this note links to, what links here, and connected notes. See [Links and backlinks](/p/docs/links-and-backlinks).
- **Outline**: the note's headings.
- **Tags**: the note's tags.
- **Graph**: the note's neighbourhood.
- **History**: its versions, and edits made at the same time as someone else. See [Versions and history](/p/docs/versions-and-history).

Open or close the rail with its button in the tab bar. ⌘I opens it on the AI tab, and closes it when AI is already showing.

## Find a note or run a command

Press ⌘O. Type part of a note's name to open it. If nothing matches, ⇧↵ creates a note with that name.

Type `>` first to run a command instead, such as **New folder**, **Today's note**, **Open graph** or **Open Space…**.

## Menus

On macOS, the **File** menu holds **New Note**, **New Folder**, **Open Space…**, **Open Recent** and **Close Space**.

All shortcuts are in [Keyboard shortcuts](/p/docs/keyboard-shortcuts).
