# Publish a note

Any note in a Space can become a public web page, straight from Niv. There's nothing to export: the page is your note.

## What you need

- The note syncs with a Space. See [Spaces](/p/docs/spaces).
- You're signed in and online.
- You're an owner or editor of the Space. Other members can see whether a note is published, but can't change it.

## Publish

1. Open the note.
2. Choose **Publish** at the right end of the tab bar.
3. Choose **Publish**.

The page is online right away, and the button now says **Published**. Choose **Copy link** to share it, or **Open page** to see it.

## Publish many notes at once

You can publish a whole folder, or several notes, in one go.

- **A folder:** right-click it in the sidebar and choose **Publish folder**. Every note inside it is published, subfolders included.
- **Several notes:** ⌘-click or ⇧-click to select them, right-click the selection and choose **Publish 3 notes** (the number is yours).

The menu tells you how many notes will go and how many stay out. A note stays out when it's local only, or when it isn't in the Space yet. Notes that are already published stay as they are, so choosing **Publish folder** again only publishes the new ones.

Niv asks before it publishes, and names the notes that stay out and why. Publishing a folder publishes what's in it now: notes you add to the folder later stay private until you publish them.

While Niv works you can choose **Hide**: it finishes on its own and tells you when it's done. At the end you see one summary: how many notes were published, and any that weren't, with the reason. If Niv couldn't reach a note, choose **Try again**.

**Unpublish folder** and **Unpublish 3 notes** work the same way and ask first, since every page's link stops working.

## The address

A published note lives at an address like this:

```
niv.md/p/your-space/your-note
```

The first part stands for your Space, and the second comes from the note's title, in lowercase, without accents or spaces. If another note in the Space has the same address, Niv adds a few letters and numbers to tell them apart.

The address is set the first time you publish. Renaming the note doesn't change it, and if you unpublish and publish again, the page comes back at the same address.

## Update the page

The page is a copy of the note at the moment you published it. When you change the note afterwards, the button says the page is out of date. Open it and choose **Update page** to publish what you see now.

## Unpublish

Choose **Published**, then **Unpublish**, and confirm. The page goes offline and its link stops working. Copies others already made, such as in search engines, aren't something Niv controls.

## Your Space's site

Everything you publish in a Space together makes its site, at an address like `niv.md/p/your-space`. The site's first page lists the published notes in their folders, and every published note shows that list beside it, with **Previous** and **Next** at the bottom. The names of the folders on the way to a published note show on the site too.

Owners and editors can arrange the site in **Settings › Published site**:

- **Title:** the name at the top of every page and in the browser tab. Empty, it uses the Space's name.
- **Home page:** which published note the site's address opens on. By default it's the list of notes.
- **Order of the index:**
  - **Alphabetical:** A to Z, notes before folders. This is the default.
  - **By the number in the name:** "1 Start" comes before "2 Write and link", and the site hides the number. Niv's sidebar shows the same order. A note's address keeps the number it had when it was first published.
  - **Manual:** drag the folders and notes into the order you want, or use ⌥↑ and ⌥↓. A note or folder moves within its own folder.

Members who aren't owners or editors can open the section and see how the site is set up, but can't change it. After publishing many notes, the summary has a shortcut: **Arrange the site**.

## What's on the page

- The note's title, emoji, cover and text.
- Links to other notes that are also published in the same Space work as links. Links to anything else show as plain text.
- Links to websites stay links.

Published pages are made to be found by search engines. Publish only what you're happy for anyone to read.
