Writing in a note

Niv · Docs Published on

A note is a page you write on. Niv saves as you type; the note's title shows Saved when it is.

The slash menu

Type / in a note to add something. Keep typing to filter the list.

  • Text, Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3

  • To-do List, Bullet List, Numbered List

  • Quote, Code, Table, Divider

  • Callout, in each of Obsidian's types: note, abstract, info, to-do, tip, success, question, warning, failure, danger, bug, example and quote

  • Internal Link: a link to another note. See Links and backlinks.

  • Template: insert a note from your templates folder. See Templates.

  • Formula: a LaTeX formula.

  • Image: upload an image from your device.

  • YouTube: embed a video from its URL.

  • Embed: embed a web page from its URL.

  • Insert with AI: add text here, written by your AI agent. See AI chat.

Format selected text

Select text and a small toolbar appears: Turn into (text, headings, quote, lists), Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, Code and Link. Hover a button to see its shortcut.

Properties

Choose Properties above the note to add details like a status, a date or a tag. Each property has a type: text, number, select, multi-select, date, person, files and media, checkbox or URL. Created time, created by and last edited time are filled in for you.

Properties are kept in the YAML block at the top of the file, the same place Obsidian keeps them.

If Niv can't read a note's properties, it says so in Settings › Sync under Properties Niv cannot read, with the line to look at. The note's text keeps syncing. When the only problem is tab indentation, Fix indentation repairs it.

Emoji, cover and width

Above the title:

  • Add emoji gives the note an icon.

  • Add cover image adds a cover from Unsplash, a pattern, or an image you upload. Hover the cover to Change cover, Reposition or Remove it.

  • Wide layout lets the note use the window's full width. Normal layout brings it back.

Find in the note

Press ⌘F. ↵ goes to the next match, ⇧↵ to the previous one, and esc closes the bar.

Show or hide the title

If your notes start with their own heading, you can hide the title above the note: Settings › General › Show title above the note.
